Pannonia (Transdanubia)

The region got its name two thousand years ago, when the ancient Roman legions were stationed here.

Lying west of the Danube it has everything that makes exploring the country and recreation pleasant and diverse. Blessed with natural beauty and full of history, is ideal for boat trips and cycling and also offers a wide selection of excellent Hungarian wines.

Three sites are listed in the UNESCO World Heritage list, the convent at Pannonhalma which is small village founded in the late 10th century, 21km southeast of Győr and has been the site of a Benedictine abbey, which even managed to continue functioning during the darkest days of Stalinism. In 1996 the abbey received the distinction of being added to UNESCO's World Heritage List and is now one of the most impressive historical complexes in Hungary.

Blessed with a mild climate, an illustrious past and a number of fine museums and monuments, Pécs, also known for its the catacombs is the jewel of Southern Transdanubia, for these reasons many travelers put it on their 'must-see' list.

At the Western gate of Hungary Lake Fertő welcomes visitors with its natural beauty and fascinating landscapes. The extensive reedy marshes, the open water surface, the vineyards on the shore, and the foothills of the Alps in the distance offer extraordinary sights.
